SDCC MARKET reaction – MCU phase 5 news

We’re back with a lot more market reaction to the news coming from San Diego Comic-Con last week, specifically Kevin Feige’s announcement of everything from phase 5. We’re going to focus on four of those announcements. So, buckle up because here we go…

Blade

We finally got a release date for the new Blade film starring Marhershala Ali – November 3, 2023. As one would expect, the volume of sales for tomb of Dracula #10 increased, although not as much as one would think.

On average, a graded copy of this book sells just about every day, thanks to a plentiful CGC census of 3,898 copies. considering that the July 23 reveal of the release date, that average number of sales bumped up to 1.5 copies per day. An 8.5 graded copy sold for $3,999 on July 24, only one dollar below the height price in this grade.

All other grades sold were well below peak, including a 6.5 copy selling for $1,455 – setting new current lows for the 30-day, 90-day, and 1-year averages.

Captain America: new world Order

Sam Wilson will return as Captain America, this time in theaters, on may 3, 2024. Graded copies of Captain America #25 from 2014, the first time Sam wielded the shield, continued to sell at a brisk pace as they have throughout July.

Three 9.8 graded copies have sold considering that the release date announcement for an average price of $172. That’s down a whopping 74% from its Falcon and the wintertime Soldier height in April 2021.

It’s going to take a lot for this book to ever reach those heights again.

Thunderbolts

Knowing the Thunderbolts were pertaining to the MCU didn’t stop a veritable frenzy from occurring when Feige announced that the Thunderbolts film would be closing out phase 5 on July 26, 2024.

13 graded copies of extraordinary Hulk #449, the first appearance of the Thunderbolts, have sold considering that July 23. The average price for a 9.8 in those sales was $732, down 36% from its height just a couple months back of $1,150.

Interestingly, an 8.5 graded copy sold on July 25 for $172, setting a new record in that grade. The previous high was $153, set on June 10, marking a net get in that grade of 12%.

Daredevil: born Again

Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio will be back for a new series on Disney+ in spring 2024. The series will consist of 18 episodes. and to think people were anxious about bloat in the 10-episode seasons of the Netflix Daredevil series. All kidding aside, the announced title of Daredevil: born again led collectors and investors to begin scarfing up copies of Daredevil #227, the first issue of Frank Miller’s born again storyline.

Six graded copies sold upon the announcement. A 9.8 graded copy sold on July 24 for $400, the second highest price paid for that grade. The highest price paid for a copy of this book was $1,020 in a Heritage auction on March 1. That strikes me as an extreme outlier. someone was crazy, or two people were, driving the price to absurd highs.

While we can’t strike that sale from the books completely, know that it is very much an aberration. Meanwhile, a 9.0 graded copy set a record high price of $65, 117% above the previous high of $30 from January 2021.

Here’s something to keep in mind, however, before breaking the bank for Daredevil #227 – Netflix already covered this storyline in season 3 of Daredevil. Daredevil: born again is likely a lot more of a symbolic title, akin to Spider-Man: Homecoming, in that the character is arriving in the MCU. and the 18 episodes are likely in place to introduce audiences to the MCU versions of Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and the Punisher.

It’s anyone’s guess what Kevin Feige has planned for Iron Fist. A wiser investment would be to focus on the first appearances of those three characters over Daredevil #227.

We’ll be back tomorrow with a lot more market reactions from the news coming out of the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con!
