Anime and Sailor Moon Are genuinely Mainstream

While flipping through the February 2017 issue of glamour magazine (the one with the pantsless women of girls on the cover), I was shocked to note the following one-page article:

That’s right, a recommendation page of makeup products for those who love Sailor Moon. (Which apparently indicates things that sparkle, make eyes look big, or come in cute packages. and cost anywhere from $6-$240.) The intro also name-drops Miyazaki, Peach Girl, and Pokemon.

It seems the manga and anime fans have grown up into a desirable young woman demographic with money to spend. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen something like this — L’Oreal Paris put out miss Manga mascara a couple of years ago — but this was presented in such straightforward fashion, with no apology or explanation needed, that it struck me as a meaningful point to note.
